Lofoten Winter Northern Lights Photography Tour

Two unforgettable winter photography workshops in Northern Norway have just ended. The Lofoten Islands once again proved why they are one of the most extraordinary destinations on Earth for landscape and Northern Lights photography.

February welcomed us with true Arctic character.
Snow-covered peaks rising straight from the sea.
Frozen fjords reflecting soft pastel skies.
Wind, silence, cold… and moments of absolute magic.

Over the course of two back-to-back Lofoten Winter Northern Lights Photography Tours, we experienced nearly every light condition imaginable — from dramatic winter storms to calm, glowing Arctic colors.

And we photographed it all!

The Magenta Arctic Light of February

In February, the sun barely climbs above the horizon.
From sunrise to sunset, the light remains low, wrapping the fjords and mountains in soft magenta and warm orange tones.

For landscape photographers, this is pure gold.

We stayed out all day, moving from location to location — chasing the best compositions, studying the foreground, refining techniques, and waiting for that precise alignment of light and landscape.

Only after blue hour would we return to our traditional red Norwegian rorbuer cabins by the sea. A warm dinner, a short rest… and then back into the Arctic darkness.

Because the night was just beginning.

Frozen Fjords & Ice Sculpted by the Sea

This year, winter delivered exactly what we hope for during a Lofoten winter photography tour.

The fjords were partially frozen.
Ice blocks floated along the shorelines.
Intricate ice formations created endless compositional opportunities.
And the rare “ice eggs” appeared along the beaches, shaped by freezing tides and crashing waves.

Every beach felt like a natural studio.
Every fjord like a new chapter waiting to be photographed.

It was a playground for creativity.

Aurora Borealis Under the Solar Maximum

With the current solar maximum at its peak, the Arctic sky rewarded us generously.

We experienced Northern Lights activity on almost every clear night — something even seasoned photographers know is never guaranteed.

Two nights will remain unforgettable.

We stood beneath the Aurora Borealis at Haukland Beach, watching green lights move above the snow-covered peaks.

And at Skagsanden Beach, after a long and freezing wait with our cameras ready, we were rewarded with a sudden and powerful display of Northern Lights dancing across the sky.

Moments like these cannot be scripted.

They can only be lived.
