What to Expect on the Autumn Lofoten Adventure

Autumn Lofoten Photography Tour – Itinerary
Note: Program may change based on weather to ensure the best photography experience.
Meeting: Sept 12 – Leknes Airport, by 4pm
Departure: Sept 18 – early morning, return to Leknes
📍 Day 1 – Vik Beach, Sunset & Aurora Photography – Arrival, relax in red rorbuer, sunset session, and first Northern Lights chase.
📍 Day 2 – Kilan, Uttakleiv & Unstad Beaches – Sunrise at Kilan, sunset at Uttakleiv Beach, followed by night photography.
📍 Day 3 – Sakrisøy, Hamnøy & Haukland Beach – Explore fairy-tale villages, waterfalls, and wild beaches while hunting the best light and Aurora shots.
📍 Day 4–5 – Flakstad, Reine, Frozen Lagoons & Fjords – Short hikes to waterfalls and hilltops, plus night sessions among fjords and wild beaches.
📍 Day 6 – Top Spots Revisit, Composition & Light – Return to the most scenic locations to capture perfect light and compositions.

Day 1
📍 Vik Beach, Sunset & First Night Aurora
Arrive at Leknes Airport by 4pm. Short 10-minute drive to our base in traditional red rorbuer. After a warm welcome and tour introduction, head out for a sunset photography session over dramatic Lofoten landscapes. Later in the evening, enjoy your first night photography session, hoping to capture the Aurora Borealis. Cabins are strategically located for quick access to top spots both north and south.
Day 2
📍 Kilan, Skagsanden & Uttakleiv Beaches
Arctic weather is unpredictable, but with our local expertise, we adapt daily to the best conditions. Sunrise takes us to Reine and Hamnøy, followed by breakfast at a local café. Morning shots at Skagsanden Beach capture the soft light on surrounding mountains. In the afternoon, move north to Uttakleiv Beach (“Dragon’s Eye”) for a colorful sunset session. Return to cabins for dinner, then night photography in the Flakstad area, one of the best locations for the Aurora.
Day 3
📍 Fairy-tale Villages & Lagoons
Sunrise at the villages between Hamnøy and Sakrisøy, where time seems to stand still. Travel south to Å, the end of the E10 panorama road. Sunset awaits in a breathtaking location surrounded by waterfalls, rivers, lakes, and peaks—perfect for landscape compositions. Evening Aurora session at a secluded lagoon, combining rivers, mountains, and night sky in stunning compositions.
Day 4 & 5
📍 Flakstad, Reine, Frozen Lagoons & Fjords
Explore waterfalls, wild beaches, fjords, and colorful fishing villages. Sunrise photography under the most vibrant skies between southern villages and Kilan. Sunset sessions further north. Short hikes to hilltops, including the Sakrisøy viewpoint with a 360° panorama over Lofoten landscapes. Night photography focuses on clear skies and Aurora captures.
Day 6
📍 Revisiting Top Spots
Return to the most scenic locations to capture the best light and refine your compositions. This day ensures final opportunities for both landscape and night photography.
Day 7
📍 Departure
Early morning transfer to Leknes Airport, marking the end of the Lofoten photography adventure.
Additional information
- Stay in traditional seaside rorbuer near Unstad, Uttakleiv, Haukland, and Vik beaches, all within a short walk from the van.
- Daily photo editing sessions covering field techniques and post-processing from RAW to web files; all sessions are recorded for later review.
- Meals may be cooked in cabins, enjoyed nearby, or at local restaurants, depending on the schedule.
- Private travel insurance is recommended.
- Pressure-mounted crampons are advised for icy conditions.

You can fly directly to Leknes Airport from Bodø (BOO). If you prefer to arrive a day early and spend a night in Bodø or Leknes, we’d be happy to recommend accommodations based on your preferences.

What weather conditions can I expect during the Autumn Lofoten photography tour?

No specific fitness level is required for this photography tour. All the photography locations are conveniently close to our van, requiring just a few minutes of walking to reach the most stunning photo compositions, as well as some of the lesser-known spots. This ensures easy access to the breathtaking scenery of the Lofoten Islands while maximizing your time for photography.
What clothing and gear do I need for this adventure?
Proper outdoor clothing is essential for this adventure, as we’ll spend extended time outdoors in nature.
Clothing Recommendations:
- High-quality merino wool base layer to stay warm and dry

During this Lofoten workshop you won’t need to overpack your backpack—just bring your essential photography gear. Extra layers of clothing can be left in the van. Each day, we’ll stop at markets, coffee shops, and restaurants, so you can pick up anything you need along the way.
What meals can I expect during this trip?
During this Lofoten photography adventure, you will experience both dining in our cozy Rorbuer cabins and at traditional Lofoten restaurants. This will be tailored based on the photography schedule, which will be adjusted to the weather to ensure the best Lofoten experience. Throughout the day, we will stop at local cafes, traditional restaurants, bakeries, and markets, allowing you to sample the local cuisine. In the evenings, we’ll take full advantage of the well-equipped kitchens in our ocean-view red cabins, providing the perfect balance of comfort and convenience.
How should I manage my suitcases?
Each participant must bring a rigid hold suitcase (not a bag) and a photographic backpack.
This is to optimize the spaces in our vans, to make everyone feel more comfortable.
