During this two-day photographic adventure led by tour leader Giulio Cobianchi, we captured the beautiful Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Drei Zinnen) from their most striking angles, taking advantage of the best light. The weather was on our side, and with careful planning and a bit of luck, we were always in the right place at the right time.
We started from our hotel and drove to the Auronzo Hut, where our counterclockwise hike began. Before reaching the sunset shooting location, we stopped to photograph the sun’s starburst between the rugged peaks, with flowers in the foreground. We practiced techniques like focus stacking, perspective blending, and capturing the sunstar effect, then continued to the Forcella on the Veneto-Trentino border to photograph the red sunset.
The group was captivated by the stunning 360-degree view, one of the most beautiful in the Dolomites. During the blue hour, we hiked the final hour to our night photography spot near the Locatelli Hut, where the Tre Cime di Lavaredo stand in their iconic form.
After a packed dinner, the sky was perfectly clear as predicted. As soon as it got dark the Milky Way appeared right above the Drei Zinnen, just as planned. We immediately started our night photography session, focusing on how to best capture the Milky Way, both with and without a star tracker.
The next day, after a hearty breakfast, we focused on processing the images, exploring workflows to create impactful photos. The editing session was divided into three parts: editing a Milky Way file captured using a star tracker, daytime photography using focus stacking and HDR, and managing a nighttime panorama.
