7-Day Itinerary 📷
Note: the program may change depending on the weather. We are flexible and will adapt to any situation in order to give you the best possible experience.
Meeting point: May 15th – Madeira Airport (FNC), not later that 3pm
Departure: On May 21th in the early morning we will bring the group back to the meeting point.
📍 Day 1 – Arrival, Ribeira da Janela & Fanal Forest
Meet at the airport and transfer to Porto Moniz. Short briefing and we’ll photograph the sunset at Ribeira da Janela beach and capture the Milky Way above Fanal forest.
📍 Day 2 – Sunrise at Miradouro de São Cristóvão & Hidden Waterfall Hike
Capture sunrise over a dramatic volcanic coastline, then relax at the hotel’s natural pools. In the afternoon, hike to Madeira’s most beautiful waterfall and shoot sunset from a panoramic viewpoint.
📍 Day 3 – Ribeira Sunrise & Fanal Forest at Sunset
Sunrise session at Praia da Ribeira da Janela, then rest and post-processing class. Evening shoot in fog-filled Fanal Forest, followed by night photography under the stars.
📍 Day 4 – Fanal forest – Move to Machico & Sunset at Pico do Arieiro
After a sunrise in the magical Fanal Forest, we will move to Machico. Then, hike to the summit of Pico do Arieiro to capture a fiery sunset above the clouds.
📍 Day 5 – Sunrise at Miradouro do Guindaste & Ponta de São Lourenço
Sunrise from a stunning ocean miradouro, then explore the rugged Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula, ending with a coastal sunset shoot.
📍 Day 6 – Sunrise at Ponta de São Lourenço & Sunset at Pico Ruivo
Early hike to photograph sunrise from the island’s most dramatic cliffs. After a break, hike to Pico Ruivo for a breathtaking sunset among colorful flowers and a chance to capture the Milky Way core above the island’s rugged mountain skyline.

Meeting Point: May 15th – Madeira Airport (FNC), not later that 3pm
Travel: 1-hour drive to our first hotel in Porto Muniz.
Introduction to Your Adventure: Overview of the week’s photography journey.
Sunset: Capture the most beautiful beach of Madeira among sea stacks and wildflowers or the mystical Fanal Forest shrouded in mist.
Astro Photo session: On our very first night, we’ll already dive into night photography, capturing the starry sky above the mystical trees of Fanal Forest.
Day 2
Miradouro de São Cristóvão & Hidden Waterfall
Sunrise: We’ll reach a stunning scenic miradouro with rugged mountain and ocean views.
Morning: After breakfast and free time to enjoy natural pools, sauna, or explore Porto Moniz.
Afternoon: Hike to one of Madeira’s most beautiful hidden waterfalls (5-hour round-trip hike on an easy, flat trail). Capture sunset at another breathtaking viewpoint on the way back.
Day 3
Ribeira da Janela & Fanal Forest
Sunrise location: We will capture the first light at Praia da Ribeira da Janela, capturing sunbursts among sea stacks and flowers.
Morning and Image Review and Editing Lesson: Enjoy a leisurely morning. After lunch, participate in a post-processing workshop covering field techniques and full editing workflow.
Evening and sunset spot: In the evening, shoot in the foggy Fanal Forest with diverse photo opportunities. Return to the hotel after sunset for rest and relaxation.
Milky Way: We’ll try another night session under Madeira’s starry sky.
Day 4
Fanal forest, Machico & Pico do Arieiro
Dawn shoot and check-out: After sunrise at Fanal forest and breakfast, check out and transfer to southeastern Madeira.
Afternoon and sunset location: Post-processing session focused on advanced landscape photography. Late afternoon hike (about 40 minutes) to Pico do Arieiro summit for sunset photography.
Day 5
Miradouros & Ponta de São Lourenço
First light: Sunrise at Miradouro do Guindaste, with breathtaking ocean views.
Short day hike and sunset: Afternoon exploration of the dramatic Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula, photographing rugged cliffs and succulent plants. Sunset spot at nearby viewpoints, followed by dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 6
Ponta de São Lourenço & Pico Ruivo
Morning: Early morning hike for sunrise over Madeira’s most dramatic coastline.
Daytime and sunset: Afternoon relaxation, then hike to Pico Ruivo (the island’s highest peak at 1862 meters) for a sunset session among dead trees and stunning mountain views.
Astrophotography: We’ll try to capture the Milky Way core rising between the rugged mountains on the horizon.
Day 7
Departure
Transfer to Madeira Airport (FNC) for your departure.
Additional information
- We will change 2 hotels in strategic locations to optimize driving hours, time and photographic schedule.
- We can enjoy lunches and dinners in the various restaurants.
- During the free mornings, you can choose either to relax at the hotel or go for a walk.
- To avoid unnecessary long drives and to make the most out of the time we have, we’re going to have 2 or 3 packed lunches and dinners. We will buy food from the supermarket, or pick up something easy to take away and have lunch or dinner in the middle of nature.
Every day, short and easy walks from the van to the photo spots are expected.
On only 4 days, longer hikes are required to reach some of Madeira’s most stunning locations:
- A 5-hour round-trip hike on an easy, flat trail to the island’s most beautiful waterfall.
- A 1.5-hour round-trip hike to the photo spot at Pico Ruivo.
- A 1-hour round-trip hike to the summit of Pico do Arieiro for sunset photography.
- A 40-minute round-trip hike to a viewpoint at Ponta de São Lourenço for a sunset session.
These hikes are manageable and designed to maximize your access to incredible landscapes while keeping the effort enjoyable.
During the week we will do more editing sessions in front of the computer, analyzing and editing the shots obtained, from the raw files to the web files. Where we will see how to manage all the techniques studied in the field.
We highly recommend a private Travel Insurance to cover any non-refundable fees and airline travel you may have in connecting with the photographic tour.

Giulio Cobianchi is a professional landscape photographer, experienced and specialized in night photography with 10 years of experience. His passions are the search for dark skies to better capture the wonder of the night sky and the exploration of new places where wild nature gives the best of itself. What level of physical fitness is required for this journey?
No particular level of preparation is required. But please keep these details in mind:
Every day, short and easy walks from the van to the photo spots are expected. On only 4 days, longer hikes are required to reach some of Madeira’s most stunning locations:
- A 5-hour round-trip hike on an easy, flat trail to the island’s most beautiful waterfall.
- A 1.5-hour round-trip hike to the photo spot at Pico Ruivo.
- A 1-hour round-trip hike to the summit of Pico do Arieiro for sunset photography.

What weather conditions can I expect during this week?
Madeira is an incredible island, the temperatures change within a few km of driving.
During the day, along the coasts we will find temperatures on average warm, very pleasant, between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius.
On the mountains where we will take the photos we will be at about 1800 meters, the temperatures will drop approaching 5 -10 degrees Celsius.
In spring, rain can occur even on otherwise clear days; it’s often unpredictable and usually passes quickly. Being prepared with layers, waterproof gear, and rain protection will help ensure you stay comfortable while capturing breathtaking landscape shots in any condition.
What clothing and gear do I need for this adventure?
Madeira’ weather can change quickly, so it’s essential to be prepared for a wide range of temperatures. During the day, temperatures can reach 15–25°C, especially while hiking, but at night—especially during Milky Way sessions at high altitudes—temperatures can drop close to zero.
Clothing Recommendations:
✔ Light, breathable layers for daytime hikes
✔ Warm, thermal layers for evening and night photography
✔ Waterproof and windproof jacket for sudden weather changes
✔ Thermal socks and insulated clothing for cold nights
✔ Hat and gloves (especially if you get cold easily)

How Should I Organize My Backpack and Gear for this Journey?
You only need to organize your backpack on the day we reach the waterfall.
It’s important to have:
- Headlamp (we will cross some tunnels)
- Mirrorless or reflex
- Wide angle and mid range tele lens
- Tripod
- Snacks
- Water
- Warm clothes
- A rainproof layer
For the remaining days, we’ll stay close to the van, making it easy to organize ourselves.
What meals can I expect during this trip?
During this Photo adventure, all breakfasts are included at the hotels. For lunch, we’ll stop for quick meals along the road, and dinner will be at a restaurant. Based on the photo schedule, we’ll decide whether to have a packed dinner while waiting for the Milky Way or dine at a restaurant. We will definitely try both options.
The itinerary will be flexible to provide the best and most relaxing experience, taking into account the weather, clouds, and your personal preferences.
How should I manage my suitcases?
Each participant must bring a rigid hold suitcase (not a bag) and a photographic backpack.
This is to optimize the spaces in our vans, to make everyone feel more comfortable.
Documents and Currency for the Portuguese adventure
- Passport or ID card: You will need a valid passport or ID card for travel within the Schengen Area (Portuagl is part of the Schengen Zone).
- Currency: The local currency is the Euro (€).
- Credit Cards: Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted in most places, including hotels, restaurants, and shops.
- ATMs: You can withdraw Euros at any ATM using your debit card. ATMs are available in most towns and villages.
